|You may have noticed the term VOC popping up everywhere these days as you shop for car care products. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound, referring to organic chemicals found in many household, automotive, and industrial products. These chemicals release compounds into the air as you use them that are known to be harmful to people and animals.|
VOCs are found in waxes, polishes, cleaners, air fresheners, fuels, paint strippers, dry cleaned clothing, paint, adhesives, nail polish, and many, many other common products.
The effects of VOCs can be mild to severe depending on how long or how often a person is exposed to them. Some known health effects are eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination, nausea; damage to liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Some VOCs are known or suspected to cause cancer in humans and animals.
VOCs play a major role in the formation of ozone, a reactive gas that forms in the air we breathe. Ozone is a recognized public health hazard that affects the function of the lungs. Because it cannot be contained to one area, it can affect you even if you personally do not use products containing VOCS.
As the population of consumers and the number of consumer products continue to expand, the concentration of VOCs in the air will go up. To counteract this effect, the state of California has taken steps to minimize the VOCs used in the manufacture of products. Manufacturers must abide by California’s VOC standards in order to sell products in or to anyone in that state. California is the first state to regulate VOC content, but other states are adopting standards as well. The Environmental Protection Agency is also in the process of implementing national VOC standards.
