Meguiar's D1801 Detailer Wheel & Paint Iron DECON is a professional-strength, unique gel formula engineered to safely and effectively dissolve and remove harmful embedded iron particles from your vehicle's body panels, wheels, and painted brake components. This ready-to-use, powerful solution is also highly effective at lifting road grime, grease, and dirt, serving as an exceptional cleaner for your wheels and brakes. Its rapid, color-changing characteristic acts as a visual indicator, turning purple as it chemically reacts with and removes ferrous (iron) contamination. Despite its robust, pro-strength performance, the D1801 formula is pH balanced, ensuring it is safe for use on all wheel finishes, painted surfaces, and is body shop safe. Available in 32-ounce and 1-gallon sizes for any detailing need.
The D1801 features a signature chemical reaction that turns the solution a deep purple/red when it encounters and dissolves iron contaminants. This rapid color-changing property, known as "bleeding," serves as immediate visual confirmation that the product is actively working and lifting harmful iron deposits from the surface. This unique indicator ensures you know the product is doing its job, providing confidence in a thorough decontamination process for both your paint and wheels.
Meguiar's D1801 utilizes a potent, professional-grade gel chemistry that clings to vertical surfaces, allowing it to penetrate and dissolve the most stubborn, embedded iron particles (industrial fallout, rail dust, and brake dust). Unlike traditional harsh chemicals, this formula is carefully pH balanced. This critical feature ensures the decon product is highly effective on contamination while remaining completely safe on all clear coats, single-stage paints, chrome, polished aluminum, and all painted or powder-coated wheel finishes.
Prep:
-
Ensure the vehicle surface (wheels or paint) is cool to the touch and dry.
-
DO NOT PRE-RINSE the surface you intend to treat, as water will dilute the product and reduce its effectiveness.
-
Work in a shaded area away from direct sunlight.
Step 1: Application
-
Generously spray Meguiar's D1801 Detailer Wheel & Paint Iron DECON directly onto the cool, dry surface, ensuring complete coverage of the area being treated (wheel, body panel, or painted brake component).
Step 2: Dwell Time and Visual Confirmation
-
Allow the product to dwell for 2-5 minutes.
-
During this time, the solution will begin to "bleed" purple/red as it chemically reacts with and dissolves iron particles.
-
IMPORTANT: Do not allow the product to fully dry on the surface. If needed, mist with water to keep the product active and wet.
Step 3: Agitation (For Wheels and Neglected Areas)
-
For Wheels: For neglected wheels or heavy soiling, agitation will significantly enhance the cleaning and decontamination. Use a quality wheel brush, such as a Speed Master Wheel Brush or Wheel Woolies Boars Hair Wheel Brush, to gently work the product into all recesses, barrel, and spoke faces.
-
For Paint: Agitation is typically not required, but for extremely heavy iron/fallout contamination, very gentle agitation with a soft wash mitt may be used.
Step 4: Rinsing
-
Thoroughly rinse away all product residue with a strong stream of water. Ensure all purple-colored foam and solution are completely removed from the wheels, tires, and paint.
Step 5: Drying
-
Dry the treated area immediately to prevent water spotting. Use a premium microfiber drying towel like the Speed Master The Notorious D.R.Y. Towel.
Post-Decontamination Treatment:
-
For Severely Neglected Wheels: Apply a second application of D1801 and agitate again if heavy soiling or "bleeding" remains after the initial treatment.
-
For Paint (Post-Wash & Dry): For maximum effectiveness, the D1801 is best applied to a surface that has already been washed and dried.
-
For Non-Ferrous Particle Contamination: If the paint surface still feels rough or if non-ferrous particles (like tar, tree sap, or paint overspray) remain, follow the D1801 treatment with a mechanical decontamination step. Use Meguiar's C2000 or C2100 Professional Clay or a similar product like the Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay or a Speed Master Clay Foam Block (available on Autogeek.net) paired with a clay lubricant to pull out any remaining bonded contamination.
