What is the advantage of wet sanding?
Wet sanding quickly removes paint imperfections that are too severe for traditional polishing. It is especially effective at removing "orange peel". By using water and a small amount of soap as a lubricant, you are ensuring the surface is well lubricated to reduce excessive friction and reducing the amount of dust in the air since it will be caught by the water. It should be noted that wet sanding is not recommended for cars with factory clear coats as these paint jobs are much thinner, so there is a higher chance of accidentally abrading through the clear coat entirely.
Which sanding disc is best?
For automotive detailing paint correction you want to use between 1500 and 4000 grit sanding discs. Sanding discs that use aluminum oxide abrasives will provide consistent abrasion and sanding marks, making polishing afterwards much easier. Sanding discs should also have a foam layer that will allow the disc to bend and curve, making sanding on non-flat surfaces easier and more consistent.
Is wet sanding necessary?
Wet sanding is only necessary if:
The paint defects are too severe to be removed with traditional polishing.
You are leveling the entire paint surface after applying a new layer of paint. It is important to note that wet sanding factory clear coat paint jobs is extremely risky since these paint jobs are much thinner and thus more prone to "burn-throughs". Also, you should always actually try using tradtional polishing before deciding if wet sanding is needed.
Does wet sanding reduce dust?
Yes. By using a mixture of water and a small amount of soap while wet sanding automotive paint, the dust will be trapped in the water, making a it much easier to clean up afterwards.
Do you need a special sander to wet sand?
No. Most sanding discs have hook and loop backing so they can be used with any machine polisher that has a hook and loop backing plate, which is the industry standard.
